I call the system I have developed to optimize our hormones and weight while in our "Third Acts" of life, The HOPE Protocol. I should have called it The HOPE Rope because it has four strands that need to be intertwined. The HOPE Rope is what we will use to pull ourselves out of The Hormone Abyss.

Today's Hack on how to look and feel awesome during your "Third Act" of life is from The Purification Strand.


PURIFICATION STRAND HACK

"Doc, yes, I want to feel great and look great, but what I know deep down is that I want to be as healthy as I can be. Are you saying that I will be much healthier by purifying my liver?"

YES!


I promise you that by optimizing your liver function, your hormones will balance faster, you will lose weight more quickly, and you will achieve a much higher level of health.


In my home, I have a wood-burning fireplace. I love it when the winter holidays arrive and family is visiting. We sit around telling stories, giggling and laughing as the fire crackles in the background. After the holidays, when everyone has left, I use an ash shovel to scoop out the ashes accumulated after several family gatherings around the fire. Over the years, I have become a pretty good ash scooper. At the beginning of my ash scooping days, I used to make quite a mess. To Vicky's chagrin, I'd have more ashes in front of the fireplace than in the ash bag.


When it comes to optimizing our livers, the key is to be good ash scoopers.


The primary job of our livers is to burn toxins (called Phase One Detoxification).

The liver's secondary job is to flush the ashes from the liver and out of our bodies (called Phase Two Detoxification).


MOST OF THE TOXINS THE LIVER HAS TO BURN AND FLUSH ARE HUMAN-MADE PRODUCTS!

"One of the primary barriers to you achieving ideal hormone balance, weight, and health, especially when you are in your "Third Act" of life, is that your liver has become disfunctional by the chronic consumption of harmful human-made products."

In my experience, forty-two years worth of practicing health optimization, I have found that the liver governs how quickly you can balance your hormones and achieve your ideal weight. If your liver is dysfunctIonal, your hormones become imbalanced, and you will suffer from the inability to lose weight (called weight loss resistance).


THE LIVER GOVERNS HORMONE CONVERSION AND ACTIVATION. THE LIVER IS ALSO IN CHARGE OF FAT BURNING.


If you asked me to give you advice on how to optimize your liver's function, especially while in your "Third Act" of life, I would say,

  1. Minimize or abstain from consuming alcohol.

  2. Use diluted Apple Cider Vinegar to improve phase two detoxification.

"Apple Cider Vinegar helps the liver with Phase Two Detoxification, the flushing out of the ashes."

Here are my rules for using Apple Cider Vinegar to detox your liver.

  • Purchase High-Quality Apple Cider Vinegar (Here is a link to the brand we use, ACV)

  • Experiment with one teaspoon in eight ounces of water ten minutes prior to eating animal protein. (Use filtered or spring water. Do not use alkaline water)

  • If you tolerate one teaspoon for the first three days, increase the amount of ACV to two teaspoons for the next seven days, and then if you tolerate the two teaspoons, increase the ACV to three teaspoons. (Days 1-3-One teaspoon) (Days 4 to 10-Two teaspoons) (Day 10 to infinity-Three teaspoons).

  • Never drink ACV straight.

PURCHASE HIGH-QUALITY APPLE CIDER VINEGAR


Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar has a high mother content. The "mother" is a byproduct of yeast and bacteria. ACV is made by adding yeast to apple juice. The yeast breaks down the apple juice sugars, resulting in alcohol. The mother is what makes Bragg's ACV the better choice. The mother is also a healthy probiotic that improves your microbiome.


Bragg's is also raw, meaning it is unfiltered and not pasteurized. The raw process causes it to have a higher concentration of acetic acid (5%, according to the Braggs) and more of the "good" bacteria that are important to a better gut microbiome.

Make it a practice to consume diluted Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar daily.

BEGIN WITH ONE TEASPOON OF ACV IN EIGHT OUNCES OF WATER

During our three-day lose-the-bloat program, we have our clients place one teaspoon of ACV in eight ounces of water and drink it ten minutes before they eat a meal that has protein within it. ACV has two actions during the lose-the-bloat portion of your program.

  1. It increases your stomach acidity

  2. It helps flush out the toxic ashes from the liver.

As we age our stomach acidity decreases. Drinking diluted ACV, which is an acid will increase our stomach acidity. You will digest your food better with increased stomach acidity, especially protein. If protein isn't digested properly, it will pass into your small intestine undigested and ferment. This will play havoc with the proper balance of gut bacteria (Called your microbiome).


Since we want to take advantage of the acidity of ACV, do not use alkaline water. Instead, use filtered or spring water with a neutral pH of 7.


ACV IS ONE OF THE EASIEST TOOLS TO USE TO FLUSH THE ASHES FROM THE LIVER AND OUR BODIES.


"Diluted ACV will not only help flush your liver of the ashes your liver creates after it burns a toxin, it will also increase your stomach acidity, which is important because as we age the strength of our stomach acidity wains."

INCREASE YOUR ACV INTAKE FROM ONE TEASPOON TO TWO TEASPOONS TO THREE TEASPOONS


During the three days of our lose-the-bloat program, drink only one teaspoon of ACV in spring or filtered water before each protein meal.

Upon completion of the first three days, you will need to only drink the diluted ACV once a day before dinner. If you had no problem with the ACV during the first three days, then titrate to two teaspoons in eight ounces of water for the first week. If after a week and if you had no adverse reactions to the ACV, increase it to three teaspoons in eight ounces of water. If the ACV is too strong in eight ounces, increasing the water to twelve ounces is quite okay.


Adverse reactions are usually acid reflux but in most cases, ACV reduces acid reflux.


Continue to drink the diluted ACV ten minutes before dinner.


NEVER DRINK THE ACV STRAIGHT


Always dilute the ACV because it is an acid and if you drink it straight, ACV will strip your teeth of their enamel.

SUMMARY OF DOC MAC'S "THIRD ACT" PURIFICATION STRAND HACK

  • During the first three days of the Lose-The-Bloat-Program, drink one teaspoon of ACV in eight ounces of water ten minutes before each meal of protein.

  • Upon completion of the Lose-The-Bloat Program, increase to two teaspoons of ACV for one week before your last meal of the day, again ten minutes before dinner.

  • If you have no adverse reactions, after one week of drinking two teaspoons of ACV, increase to three teaspoons (one tablespoon) of ACV in either eight or twelve ounces of water.

  • Remember, to continue to drink the diluted (Do not drink it straight) ACV ten minutes before your meal.
