Menopausal Livers and Water

DOC MAC's LIVER OPTIMIZATION COURSE THREE

"Doc, I know that to optimize my hormones and weight more quickly, I need to optimize my liver. You’ve taught me about Apple Cider Vinegar and alcohol but isn’t water the best purifier? If so, how much and what kind of water do I need to drink to purify my liver and body?

WATER

“There is no better purifier for our liver or for our bodies.”

  • Want To Lose Weight And Be Healthy? Drink Your Frigging Water!

  • Want to lose even more weight? Drink at least eighty ounces of water every day.

  • If you want to take it to the next level, drink at least eighty ounces of electrolyte-induced alkaline water daily.

“The primary purpose of this course is to increase water's value, and what we value defines us.”

This course is much longer than most because drinking enough water is so important to our hormones, weight, health, and minds. If you do not have enough time to read the entire course, which I urge you to do, then read the quotes, and you will get the gist of this course.

My Water Story

Vicky and I were attending a medical conference. At these conferences, they will place the expo in the way of the keynote speaking rooms; this way, you have to pass through the exhibition whenever you want to attend one of these lectures.

The expo is where all the vendors are pitching their medical products. This particular conference had to do with anti-aging medicine, so most hawked products related to longevity.

I am one of those guys that don't like to be hassled by vendors. However, a vendor was hawking machines that made alkaline water on this particular day.

As I walked by, the vendor tried to get my attention. I looked straight ahead, doing my best to ignore him. Suzanne Somers was the featured speaker, and I wanted to get a good seat. The vendor had a bottle of water in his hand, and I am sure he could tell I was planning on ignoring him.

When I got closer to him, the vendor extended his arm and handed me a bottle of water. He had a peculiar smile on his face. It was saying, "I know your type." I took the bottle of water and headed to my seat.

Once I had a good seat, I took a swig and thought this water tasted different.

It reminded me of the first time I drank Gatorade. Do you know how Gatorade disappears in your mouth as if it never gets to your esophagus? I downed the bottle's water as if I were in a commercial.

Then suddenly, I had to urinate. I mean, SUDDENLY!

I now had to go back through the expo to get to the restrooms. The vendor smiled his peculiar smile at me as I passed. I quickened my pace.

When I returned to my seat, I was even more in a hurry than I was the first time. The vendor extended his arm toward me with another bottle of water in his hand. Again he said nothing. I took the bottle from him and returned to my seat.

I drank the water. Then guess what? Yup, I had to urinate again.

As I walked back to my seat this time, I had to ask him what was in this dang water. He handed me another bottle. I was thirsty even though I had drunk two bottles of water already. It was the first time I had been that thirsty in ages. He explained that he was selling a machine that caused water to be oxygenated and elevated the pH of the water. (Kangen)

The year was 2008. I had never heard of alkaline water up to that day, and to be transparent, I disliked water. (I played rugby when I was in college, and because of the aftergame parties and the ugg mornings, I learned not to like water, but that’s another story.)

Discovering alkaline water gave me a whole new outlook on water.

Alkaline water has since become trendy. You can purchase it anywhere. My local grocery store has its own brand of 9.5 pH water. If you live in a rural area, you can purchase alkaline water from Amazon with free shipping if you have Amazon Prime. My favorite is a brand called Essentia. Here is an Amazon link to it. (I am not affiliated with Amazon)

“As we age, our ability to thirst diminishes, and without the ability to be thirsty, we dehydrate.

It is essential to track our water intake as we enter our “Third Act” of life because of this inability to become thirsty.

Dehydration occurs when we use and lose more water than we take in. Dehydration also leads to an imbalance in our electrolytes, which are essential for communication at the cellular level.

“Being dehydrated adversely affects our hormones, metabolism, liver, and our ability to think.”

I have seen people lose weight by just increasing their water intake. In reality, we are nothing more than big bags of water. In fact, we are about 60 percent water. Even our planet is primarily water.

While participating in The HOPE Protocol, ensure that drinking enough water is high on your priority list.

In a study carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the researchers found:

  • 7 percent of adults reported no daily consumption of drinking water

  • 36 percent of adults reported drinking 8-24 ounces of water a day

  • 35 percent of adults reported drinking 32-56 ounces of water a day

  • 22 percent of adults reported drinking 64 ounces or more a day

“The recommended adequate intakes of total water from all sources each day for most adults between 19 and 30 years of age are 3.7 liters (or about 130 fl oz) for men—2.7 liters (about 95 fl oz) for women.

As you can see, nearly all of us are under-hydrated.

Your Liver and Water

Recall that the liver has a three-step system of detoxification: the liver filters, burns, and flushes.

In the first detoxification step of The HOPE Liver Optimization Course, we used ACV to help flush the toxins out. I placed it before water, but I was not placing it above water as a body or liver purifier. Because nothing, and I mean nothing, is a better liver detoxifier than drinking an adequate amount of water each and every day.

Hormones and Water

Water flushes out estrogen’s metabolites. Recall that your liver metabolizes estrogen. Water helps flush these metabolites from your body.

Water is also essential for hormone and neurotransmitter production. By now, you know that looking and feeling young while in your “Third Act” of life is all about your hormones.

Hormones are what make us look great, feel great, and even act great. By not drinking water, your hormones will suffer; when our hormones suffer, we suffer.

“Mac Hack:

"If your husband is acting grumpy, offer him a glass of water instead of whacking him with a frying pan. Dehydration, like hunger, causes us to be grumpy, and also, many times when we think we are hungry, we are actually thirsty.”

Drinking tap water can actually disrupt our hormones.

Hormones find their way into our water supply. Most hormone molecules are too small for filtering systems to filter. As a result, hormones, especially synthetic hormones, are found in our drinking water. These hormones are thought to come primarily from birth control pills that are urinated into the drinking water system.

The hormones that are the most prominent within our drinking water are estrogens, and these estrogens come from a multitude of sources. And remember, when it comes to our hormones, the first condition we are tackling is estrogen dominance, so the last thing we want to be doing is drinking estrogens.

Wait until you learn about estrogens and dairy products. You’ll be shocked!

“Drinking ultra-filtered water where synthetic hormones have been removed is of the utmost importance.”

Weight and Water

“Water is an appetite suppressant."

Water will cause the stomach to expand. When the stomach is stretched, it signals the brain to turn off the hunger hormone called ghrelin and turn on the satiation hormone called leptin. So having that tall glass of water before a meal will help your appetite by giving you a sensation of fullness.

“If you have an urge to snack, drink 16 ounces of water and watch your snack craving disappear.”

In a 2014 study, 50 overweight females drank 16 ounces of water 30 minutes before meals for eight weeks. The participants experienced weight and fat loss. They also reported a reduction in appetite before the meal.

“Drinking water before eating a meal reduced participants' caloric intake by 75 calories per meal.”

Water and Metabolism

In another 2014 study, 12 people drank 16 ounces of cold water; the participants' metabolism increased. Drinking at least 16 ounces of water increased participants resting metabolism by 10–30% for about an hour. Those who drank 16 ounces of water before meals lost 44% more weight than those who did not drink water before a meal.

Water and Sodas

Many of my clients have reported that they can more easily replace their habits of drinking sodas and juices by drinking water.

Sodas and juices add to your fluid intake, but their high amounts of sugar will cause insulin to spike. When insulin spikes, you will be placed into a fat-storing state.

Diet sodas also count toward fluid intake, but artificial sweeteners decrease health and overburden the liver. Remember, the liver has to filter, burn and flush artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are human-made and not allowed while on The HOPE Protocol.

In another study from 2015, female participants drank 8 ounces of water after lunch each day and lost 13.6 percent more weight than women who drank 8 ounces of diet beverages.

“If you want to optimize your hormones, weight, health, and mind, never drink your calories.”

One study found that if overweight women replaced two or more caloric beverages with water daily, they lost between 2 and 2.5 percent of their weight within eight months.

Water and Stored Fat.

Water is necessary to burn fat. In addition, the body needs water to metabolize stored fat.

This burning of fat is called lipolysis. Water interacts with your fat and breaks your fat into two compounds, glycerol, and fatty acids.

“The better hydrated you are, the better your body breaks down stored fat and fat within your food.”

Water, especially alkaline water, is a diuretic, so expect some nocturnal urination. You will be happy that you have to urinate at night. You are literally urinating away fat. Fats, when metabolized, make water. So every time you wake up and urinate, say goodbye to some more fat.

“I once weighed myself prior to sleep and then weighed myself upon arising. I lost six pounds while I slept. Fat is broken down into water, and you expire the water through breathing and urinating nocturnally."

Water and Health

Water is necessary to remove waste from your body. Peristalsis, the movement that removes feces from your body, is inhibited when you are dehydrated; therefore, adequate water helps cleanse your intestines of toxic wastes.

You will discover that a healthy gut is essential for weight loss and health. Our bowels need water to work optimally, and our health will not be optimal without an optimally functioning gut.

The gut needs water to keep our bowel movements regular, and if you have not yet discovered, your bowel movement regularity slows when you make a diet change.

Without enough water and the lack of the human-made fats you were most likely eating prior to being on The HOPE Protocol, and then combining that with the weight-gaining grains you were also probably consuming, your elimination will slow down, possibly to a standstill causing you to be constipated. Your gut will adapt while you are eating the Meso-Menu, and you will become regular again.

Water is also necessary for the kidneys to filter toxins and remove them through urination. Although, when the body is dehydrated, the kidneys will retain water. When the kidneys lack sufficient water, waste products and fluid will be retained, causing UTIs to occur more often.

Water is also necessary to soften your stool. If you are dehydrated, feces harden, which will increase your chances of being constipated.

Also, being adequately hydrated is the best way to prevent kidney stones.

Since I am writing about kidneys, the kidneys will not release water when you are dehydrated. They will recirculate the water meant to be eliminated in the urine, which will cause bloating and the fatigue that comes with bloating.

Water and Skin

Our skin retains water for numerous reasons. When your skin becomes dehydrated, you will see increased wrinkles and cellulite. Want to keep your skin smooth and silky? Drink at least eighty ounces of water.

The skin passes toxins from our body through sweating. If the skin is dehydrated, you will not sweat, and toxins will remain within your skin.

The water within the skin also keeps our body temperature stabilized. If the skin is dehydrated, you will have less tolerance for heat.

“While in menopause, the last thing you want to do is contribute to your hot flashes and night sweats by turning up the heat through dehydration.”

Also, if you suffer from night sweats, your skin is already dehydrated, and you will have an increased intolerance to heat and cold.

Thinking and Water

Our blood delivers oxygen to every cell. Our blood is 90% water. If we are dehydrated, our blood becomes thicker, providing less oxygen to our brains.

When your brain lacks oxygen, your thinking will be adversely affected. Therefore the water will help us have better mental clarity and blow out the fog that occurs in our "Third Acts" that dehydration causes.

When you are dehydrated, blood pressure will increase due to the thickness of the blood. In addition, high blood pressure will affect your thinking because it causes brain irritation.

Water Quotes

“Water is the driving force of all nature.”

— Leonardo da Vinci

“Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to constipation and kidney stones.”

— CDC

Summary

The general rule is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water. So, for example, if you weigh 180 pounds, you should drink 90 ounces of water daily.

“I have found that if my clients drink 80 ounces of water daily, their hormones, weight, health, and minds reach an optimal state more quickly.”

And we all like to reach our goals more quickly!

I have found that alkaline water with electrolytes is best for us. Alkaline water is an actual anti-oxidant. The machine the vendor was selling at the medical conference somehow micronized the water molecules, and that is why it seemed to disappear in my mouth.

“Alkaline water is the only water I have found that increased my thirst.”

Not all alkaline waters have electrolytes, so make sure the one you drink does. For example, some bottled waters are alkalinized through ionization.

"If you cannot find alkaline water or have found alkaline water is out of your budget, drink spring water."

Try to avoid purified water. Purified water is purified with toxic chemicals like aluminum. These chemicals are inert, but if you put some lemon in your water, these chemicals may be released and may cause toxicity.

It is imperative to overdrink water while on The HOPE Protocol because much of the initial weight loss is bloat, which is retained water. This is especially true when you do a “Protein Day.”

"If you develop headaches and/or leg cramps while doing The HOPE Protocol, it is most likely because you are dehydrated."

If you are ill, if it's hot, or if you have diarrhea or vomiting, it is vital to increase your water intake even more.

If you sweat while doing physical activity, it is crucial to increase your water intake, or you may become dehydrated.

One way to know that you are drinking enough water is to examine the color of your urine. It should be light yellow to clear.

I have found that it’s best to achieve your goal of eighty ounces of water a day into four smaller goals.

“The Mac 4x20 rule: Make it a goal to drink four 20-ounce servings of water daily.”

Water and Plastic

Unfortunately, most water comes in plastic bottles. If you can, avoid plastic water containers. You’ll learn more about how many plastics are estrogenic in The Hormone Strand of Phase One.

Since most water comes in plastic and it is difficult to get around this, ensure the plastic is BPA Free. BPA and other chemicals found in plastic are estrogenic.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

I do not like reverse osmosis filters as much as I should because they demineralize the water. If you use a reverse osmosis filter, supplement with a mineral supplement.

First Liver Optimization Tool:

  • Add one tsp of raw Apple Cider Vinegar to eight ounces of neutral pH water.

  • Drink the ACV ten minutes before you have a Meso-Meal.

  • Do not drink the ACV straight.

  • If you find ACV disgusting, don't drink it.

Second Liver Optimization Tool:

  • Avoid alcohol if you want to balance your hormones and lose weight quickly.

  • If you must drink alcohol, do not drink alcohol for the first two weeks.

  • After two weeks, when you drink alcohol, keep it to one scheduled serving per week.

  • When you do imbibe, drink a "Mac Cocktail."

Third Liver Optimization Takeaway

  • Drink eighty ounces of ultrafiltered water daily

  • Drink Alkaline water if it is in your budget

  • Do not drink purified water

  • Do not drink tap water, ever.
