Pause Blog: Eat Fats...The Right Fats

Updated: May 24, 2022

As you probably know, we travel around the country in our RUV exploring different regions’ sights and foods. Vicky and I have dedicated our lives"to making "ur "Third Acts" the best act yet. And what we learn along the way, we share with you.

We have recently been in the southeast states of Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia. The different meals we have had in this region are foods to write home about.

Much of the foods are fried, and we all know that fried foods can cause havoc to our health.

But…If you fry foods in the right fats, it will actually increase your health.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOUR HORMONES!

"We are nothing more than a reflection of our hormones."

If you have ten minutes, learn how the right kind of fats will make your "Third Act" AWESOME!

HORMONES

As we travel into our third acts of life, our hormones change, shift, and become chaotic.

The first phase of The Hormone Abyss causes:

  • Weight Gain

  • Weight Loss Resistance

  • Sleeping Disorders

  • Hormonal Induced Anxiety

  • Hormonal Induced Depression

  • Loss of Interest in Being Intimate

  • Loss of Motivation to be Social

Besides being in your "Third Act" of life, the secondary cause of being hormonally challenged is chronic inflammation. The primary cause of chronic inflammation is the food we eat. The secondary cause of chronic inflammation is our environment.

How important is chronic inflammation to your hormones, weight, health, and life?

The diseases that most likely will end your life:

  • Cancer

  • Diabetes

  • Heart Disease

  • Alzheimer's

Are all caused by chronic inflammation.

To have an awesome "Third Act," we need to consume foods that decrease inflammation and avoid foods that increase inflammation. When it comes to fats...

CONSUME GOD-MADE FATS AND AVOID HUMAN-MADE FATS

HUMAN-MADE FATS

Vegetable oils are a human-made product. They cause inflammation. Here is a list of common pro-inflammatory vegetable oils...

  • Soybean oil.

  • Canola oil.

  • Corn oil.

  • Cottonseed oil.

  • Sunflower oil.

  • Peanut oil.

  • Sesame oil.

  • Rice bran oil.

From this point on, if you wish to be slender and achieve optimal health while in your "Third Act" of life,..DO NOT USE THESE HUMAN-MADE FATS.

I don't know about you, but my family was taught to use vegetable oils. My generation were told that vegetable oils were good for us and butter was bad. We were told this by the government and the medical associations. They told us that it was healthier to use soybean, corn, safflower, and canola oils. They told us that these oils were healthy for our heart and that saturated fats were bad for our hearts and for our overall health. Do you remember? They said butter and lard would kill us! They convinced us that the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially the omega 6 fats were healthy for us.

Other associations that jumped on the vegetable oil bandwagon were:

  • The American Heart Association,

  • The National Institutes of Health,

  • And our government’s dietary guidelines.

They were so wrong!

Our grandparents' generation ate a diet filled with omega 3 fats, not omega 6 fats. The main source of omega 3’s today is fish, wild game and wild plants. Wild meat and grass-fed beef contain 7 times as much omega 3 fats as conventionally raised animal proteins. Conventionally raised beef has a minute amount of Omega 3s within them.

When we moved away from God-made meats to human-made conventional raised meats we flipped flopped our intake of Omega 3s and Omega 6s. Omega 6 fats are pro-inflammatory! Omega 3 fats are anti-inflammatory!

A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health discovered that the over-consumption of omega 6 fats and the under-consumption of omega 3 fats significantly increased:

  • Heart disease

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Metabolic syndrome or pre-diabetes

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome

  • Macular degeneration (eye damage and blindness)

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Asthma

  • Cancer

  • Psychiatric disorders

  • Autoimmune disease

In a nutshell, here are the main reasons you should not use vegetable oils if you want to be awesome as you mature.

  1. Vegetable Oils contain an unnatural amount of Omega-6 fats.

  2. Vegetable Oils are unnaturally manufactured, highly refined and extracted using heat and a multitude of toxic chemicals.

  3. Vegetable Oils contribute to excess inflammation and free radical damage.

Note: Free radicals are what damage our cells internally. This is called oxidation. Vegetable Oils (Human-Made Oils) cause oxidation. God-made fats are anti-oxidants.

GOD-MADE FATS

When I was in elementary school once a year, the administration would have a physical assessment of all the students. I was an above-average athlete, so my physical abilities were rarely questioned. One day, I remember standing in line when the other sixth-grade teacher at my school was weighing all of us. His name was Mr. Leitz. I don't think he ever liked me. Now that I think about him, he gives me a few other stories to write about in the future. Anyways, we were all getting weighed. He was using an old-time doctor's scale. He would play with the balance and shout out the student's weight. I was standing there listening as the girls weighed like 60, 70, or 80 pounds. Everyone was typical. After they were weighed, they would run off to recess. I got on the scale, and Mr. Leitz yelled out my weight. I'm not sure why he had to yell it out. My memory fails me there.

110 Pounds!

"Wow, you're fat, Mac."

I heard gasps and chuckles behind me. I remember looking around at the other students.

Then I looked at him, and he had this military-like look, you know the look sergeants give new recruits in the movies. I walked away with tears running down my cheeks. I'm sure I was sobbing. I was embarrassed. When I had turned around, I saw a girl that I had a crush on. She didn't gasp or chuckle, but she was there looking like she was embarrassed for me. I'm sure I didn't pursue her after that. I know me. If someone told me that I was fat, I must be fat, and who wants to have a fat boyfriend.

Now that I was fat, the first thing I went off and did was start watching my eating. Like everyone else, I started watching my fat intake. We were all told that fat was what made us fat. If I avoided fat, I would no longer be fat.

I cut my fat intake, and I had my mom purchase margarine. That's what the commercials on television told us to do. Of course, the low-fat diet I placed myself on was super successful at making me have man-boobs. Low-fat diets mean a high carbohydrate diet.

Man boobs, well in my case, boy boobs, will destroy a boy's self-confidence.

I did not rid myself of those boobs until I became a dedicated weight lifter in my fifties.

They're still there, but now they look like a bodybuilder's chest instead of boobs that should be bra-ed. I struggled with my boobs more than my weight.

Then my wife went into menopause forty years after my weight was yelled out on the sidewalk, and I was still on a soapbox preaching about low-fat diets. But I started doing extensive research to help her out. Then I started experimenting with a high protein diet.

I noticed as I developed a menu for her and shared it with my weight-conscious patients that certain fats helped her lose weight and other fats hindered her weight loss.

Boom!

I noticed that the fats that worked for her were, in essence, God-made fats, and the fats that hindered her, and in some cases caused her to gain weight were human-made.

Boom!

I studied how the vegetable oils, otherwise the human-made fats were made, and I was appalled. First of all, vegetable oils are mainly made from seeds. These vegetable fats are processed over and over with the use of harsh toxic chemicals. Vegetable oils are a perfect example of human-made food. Below is a graphic I found on the internet that show the different steps to make canola oil.

I then researched fats and discovered that God-made plant-based fats were processed solely by pressing them and squeezing the oil from them. When oils are made by the simple task of squeezing the oil out of them, they are called virgin oils. If the oil was pressed from the olive, avocado, or coconut, it means that no heat or chemicals were used to extract the fat. The oil is pure and unrefined. This is why you want to purchase virgin oils. You will also want to purchase organic oils.

You will also see them called first pressed meaning this is the oil that came from the first pressing of the fruit, You'll also see them labeled "Cold Pressed" meaning that there were no heat used, the process is completely mechanical. So, when it comes to purchasing any of the fruit oils, coconut, avocado and olive oils, purchase extra virgin organic first and cold pressed oils.

These are not the only fats we use for cooking. We also use fats churned from cow's milk. When milk is churned the cream comes to the top and is turned in butter. Butter is my favorite fat. Butter can be taken one step further and turned into Ghee. This is done by clarifying the butter by skimming the milk solids out of the butter. Ghee has less lactose so it may be best used by those that have an intolerance to lactose.

We use these God-made oils differently.

  • For high heat, we cook our foods in organic extra virgin cold-pressed coconut and avocado oil.

  • For medium heat, we use ghee and butter from grass-fed pasture-raised cows.

  • We have found that Olive oil is best used raw.

Pour olive on most foods. For years Vicky and I housed foreign exchange students from France and Spain during the summer. We discovered that the Mediterranean Diet was simple; food was just an excuse to pour olive oil over.

Once I switched Vicky and me to God-made fats and threw away the human-made fats, she, me, patients, and clients climbed to a much higher level of health and wellbeing.
