the simulator consists of an acrylic box (fig. 6 a), which is flooded with water. the box is equipped with a waterproof housing for all of the instrumentation and camera systems. the housing is secured by 9 bolts which are tightened using a torque wrench. the instrumentation systems are connected by tubes and wires and are held together by a frame. the frame is composed of an aluminium frame and an aluminium plate, which is connected by a silicon rubber. the rubber plate is inserted into a separate acrylic box, which is mounted on the aluminium plate. the rubber plate and acrylic box provide a snug fit in the frame. the volume of the housing is approximately 2000 ml and it holds the inner system, which is composed of the silicone phantoms and the two cameras. the inner system is fully submerged in the water, which also serves as a medium for high-frequency ultrasound imaging. the latter, together with the titanium housing and the steel frame, allows the sound waves to pass through the silicone phantoms. the titanium housing has an opening, which allows the ultrasound waves to pass from the water to the silicone phantoms. an overview of the inner system is presented in fig. 6 b.
