I converse with dozens of menopausal women every week. Nearly every one of them complains of the same symptoms.
Weight Gain
Weight Loss Resistance (the inability to lose weight no matter what she does)
Sleeping Disorders (She sleeps five hours or less)
Hormonal Induced Anxiety (She worries all the time)
Hormonal Induced Depression (Low days where she feels emotional)
Loss of Interest in Being Intimate
Loss of Motivation to be Social
That is where they are.
When I ask them where they want to go, they nearly all say the same thing. They want to be their "old" self. They want to feel "normal."
They want to feel comfortable in their clothes
They want to sleep better so they do not feel exhausted
They want to quit worrying about everything
They want to not feel low, emotional, and moody.
They want to feel comfortable enough with their bodies to be intimate with their partners.
They want to be fun again, be happy, and leave their self-induced isolation.
I began this blog to teach menopausal women how to traverse the gap between where they are to where they want to go.
After forty-two years of helping over ten thousand women and men in their optimize the way they feel and look, I have discovered that to be optimal, they will need to intertwine four strands of tools into a rope, a rope I call The HOPE Rope.
The four strands are:
Hormones
Organics
Purification
Enlightenment
Today I want to review the first four tools I have taught within this blog that we use to optimize HORMONES.
THE FIRST TOOL: THE SUBJECTIVE TEST
The first tool I taught was what we in medicine call a subjective test. You can think of the subjective test as a list of complaints that you are experiencing.
Before I move on, remember there are three phases to menopause. In Phase One of HOPE, we concentrate on the first condition menopausal women experience: ESTROGEN DOMINANCE.
We will eventually arrive to phase two where we deal with menopausal thyroid dysfunction.
If you haven't taken the test, or if you haven't taken the subjective test in a while, download the test below and take it,
THE SUBJECTIVE TEST WILL TELL YOU WHERE YOU ARE WHEN IT COMES TO THE SYMPTOMS OF ESTROGEN DOMINANCE
THE SECOND TOOL: THE OBJECTIVE TEST
If you flunked this subjective test, then it is imperative to discover what your progesterone to estradiol ratio is.
The P/E Ratio is in my opinion, the most important number a woman over fifty can know.
In my experience, I have found that a woman's life after fifty is determined by how well her progesterone and estradiol hormones are dancing.
Science says that 200 moles of progesterone to 1 mole of estradiol is the ideal P/E Ratio. In my experience, I have found that this is the minimum ratio. My superstars, (women who are at their bottom weight and have maintained that weight for years, are bubbling with energy, and have a happy life) have P/E Ratios of approximately 500 moles of progesterone to 1 mole of estradiol. To better understand this biochemical ratio, think of moles as molecules.
So, if you flunked The Subjective Estrogen Dominance Self Test above, please, order the Salivary Assay Estrogen Dominance Test Kit. You can order this test from Amazon or from a lab directly. There are a few states that do not let you order a test kit from out of state. I do not know the reason why they would do that but if you live in one of those states call the lab company to see if there is a solution. There seem to be solutions but each lab company has different ones.
When it comes to Progesterone to Estradiol Ratios, the best test to do is a salivary Assay. Your insurance company will not pay for it. Your doctor will not order it. Please spend the money to discover your P/E Ratio. The test kit is inexpensive and the mystery of how you are feeling once you are in menopause will be revealed.
The test is easy to do. You will spit in a tube and send the tube to the lab and they will send you your progesterone to estradiol ratio. Once you receive the results of the test, schedule a review of your labwork with me. I do not charge for this consultation. Click here to schedule. ESTROGEN DOMINANT SALIVARY ASSAY TEST KIT
THE THIRD TOOL: DIM
WHAT IS DIM?
DIM is an estrogen router. Hormones, like food, are digested into different compounds. These compounds are called metabolites. Some metabolites cause bad things like cancer and obesity. Others do not. DIM routes your estrogen down the safe path.
The metabolite that DIM helps produce is similar to the original estrogen molecule. It will help with preventing heart disease, in building strong bones, and it will keep your skin and hair looking young and supple.
I have my wife take 200 mg of DIM with dinner and I take 400 mg.
Click the link below to investigate the DIM product Vicky and I currently use. It has an extra ingredient to assist with absorption.
(Always seek advice from your healthcare practitioner before using any supplement)
THE FOURTH TOOL: PROGESTERONE
It is my opinion, the "Who-Saids) misnamed Estrogen Dominance. I believe Estrogen Dominance should have been called Progesterone Deficiency.
Recall in a woman's typical 28-day cycle, estradiol increases, and increases until it hits its target on or about the 14th day. Once estradiol hits its mark, you ovulate. From the spot on the ovary where your egg is released, the ovary releases progesterone.
If you no longer ovulate, (menopause) your ovaries do not release progesterone. The lack of progesterone production is the primary cause of Estrogen Dominance.
Recall from previous classes, Progesterone is:
Indirectly Your Fat-Burning Hormone
Your Happy Hormone
Your Sleep Hormone
After Vicky's Estrogen Dominance Saliva Test indicated that she was moderately Estrogen Dominant, she began using low doses of progesterone cream. You should never use progesterone without first being diagnosed that you are Estrogen Dominant or that your progesterone is deficient. And always seek the counsel of your healthcare practitioner before taking any supplement.
You no longer need a prescription to purchase progesterone, And it is much more affordable over the counter than from a pharmacist. Here are the different progesterone creams that Vicky and our clients have used. If you would like to investigate the cream, click on the links provided and you will be taken to Amazon.
Emerita cream is my favorite. This cream has 20 milligrams of progesterone per 1/4 teaspoon. It is my favorite because I have never heard anyone complain about it. It is also paraben and fragrance-free. You will soon discover that this is favorable.
How To Apply Progesterone Creams Remember, do not use progesterone cream without first consulting your healthcare provider. Below is for information purposes only.
Vicky would rub the cream thoroughly where her chin touched her sternum when she flexed her head forward. All hormone creams must be used on thin skin and it is good practice to move your application to a different part of your body each month.
Progesterone will make your skin thicker, therefore, if you apply the cream at the same location each time, the thickening of your skin will make absorption an issue. Other locations that have thin skin are your inner arms, inner thighs, and ankles.
Postmenopause Application I had Vicky apply the cream for 25 days, then take three days off.
Pre-menopause Application If Vicky were still menstruating, she would use half a dose (⅛ teaspoon or one-half of a pump) of progesterone for 14 days of her cycle, then a full dose (¼ teaspoon or a complete pump) for the next 14 days of her cycle. Then take three days off.
Update: I recently heard of a unique way to apply hormone creams that makes total sense. Rub the cream on your ankles and cover your ankles with socks while you sleep so you don't inadvertently pass the cream to your loved ones.
Though Vicky cycled her cream and still does today, most of my menopausal clients like to use progesterone cream daily. The reason is that when they take a three-day break, they crash; meaning the benefits, like less anxiety, better sleep, and less depression, came back.
