I call the system I have developed to optimize our hormones and weight in our "Third Acts" of life, The HOPE Protocol. I should have called it The HOPE Rope because it has four strands that need to be intertwined. The HOPE Rope is what we will use to pull ourselves out of The Hormone Abyss of menopause and andropause.

"Doc, what are the best fats to eat while on your program?"

I promise you that if you eat God-made fats and avoid human-made fats, your hormones, weight, health, and life will improve by leaps and bounds.

When I was in elementary school, once a year the administration would have a physical assessment of all the students. I was an above-average athlete, so my physical abilities were rarely questioned. One day while I was in sixth grade, I remember standing in line to get weighed. There were two sixth-grade teachers that taught at my school, both males, the only male teachers in the school. The other sixth-grade teacher was weighing all of us. His name was Mr. Leitz. I don't think he ever liked me. Now that I think about him, he gives me a few other stories to write about in the future. Anyways, we were all standing in line to get weighed. He was using an old-time doctor's scale. He would call your name and have you stand on the scale. He then would play with the balance and shout out the student's weight. His teacher's pet would be writing down the weights of all of the sixth graders.

I was standing there listening as the girls weighed 60, or at the most 70 pounds and the guys weighed between 80 to 90 pounds. Everyone was typical. After they were weighed, they would run off to recess. I was next and anxious to get off to recess and play some ball. I jumped on the scale, and Mr. Leitz yelled out my weight.

"110 Pounds! Wow, you're fat, Mac."

I heard gasps and chuckles in the line behind me.

I remember looking around at the other students to warn them with a threatening look. Then I looked at him, and he was giving me this military-like look, you know the look sergeants give new recruits in the movies; he stared back at me as if he was daring me to say something.

I walked away holding back tears from the embarrassment. The tears eventually broke loose and I had to wipe them away with the shoulder sleeve of my shirt. I turned to see if he was still wearing his face of dare and to also send some eye darts his way.

But...instead of seeing him, I saw Alice, a girl that I had a crush on standing in the line. She wore an empathetic embarrassed look. Right then and there I decided not to pursue her any longer. I was fat because a "Who-Said" told me so and who wants a fat boyfriend?

"Who-Saids," are people with authority who can cause a loss of self-confidence or can cause a gain in self-confidence depending on what they say. Do you have people in your life that said stuff about you that sunk into your core belief about yourself and what he or she said stuck there as if it was embedded in concrete?

Now that I was fat, I started paying attention to what I ate. The television commercials told me that fat made me fat, so, I started cutting fatty foods out of my diet. I had my mom purchase margarine because that was what the commercials told me to do.

Of course, the low-fat diet I placed myself on was super successful at making me fatter. If you are eating a low-fat diet, that means you are eating a high-carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrates are what make you fat.

"Fat doesn't make you fat! Carbohydrates that spike blood sugar make you fat!"

As you all know by now, I went into nutritional medicine. I can thank Mr. Leitz for that. I tell people that I have been practicing nutritional medicine for forty-two years but in reality, I have been studying nutrition for 55 years. Back when I started studying nutrition everyone was on the soapbox preaching about low-fat diets. All I had to do was to look around to see that low-fat diets were not working. I started to read books on how to not be "fat."

If you look at photos of me back then, you will see that I was an athletically toned twelve-year-old. I probably weighed more than others because I was taller than most at that age and had very muscular legs, which carry way more weight.

As you also know by now, after graduation I opened a wellness center. I discovered that wellness is brought about by customizing meal plans for my patient's bodies, creating activities for their bodies that they would do, and teaching them how to control their thoughts and feelings.

Nearly every patient that came to my clinic wanted to lose weight. The patients that gave me the most problem when it came to being successful with weight loss were menopausal women.

I tried every diet known to humankind on menopausal women and nothing worked. It wasn't until my wife went into menopause and we didn't know what to do and we couldn't find anyone else that knew what to do that is when I made helping menopausal women's plight my life's mission.

As I have also mentioned before, my parents have nine siblings on one side and ten siblings on the other side. Most of them passed due to complications of diabetes. I have had diabetes nearly my entire adult life. I had developed a diabetic menu for me and other diabetics that allowed me and most of my diabetic patients to thwart the use of diabetic medications. My wife had been cooking me meals that kept my blood sugar down for decades. Once she went into menopause, and you must remember she was a nurse and certified nutritionist, she gained the menopause-thirty. She already knew that dieting didn't work on menopausal women. She started eating my diabetic menu and voilà, she started losing weight.

We started using my diabetic menu on menopausal women and nearly every one of our pre and post-menopausal patients started rapidly losing weight. As I worked on the menu, we noticed that the fats that worked for us were, in essence, Godmade fats, and the fats that hindered us and caused us to gain weight were human-made.


I studied how vegetable fats, otherwise human-made fats, were made, and I was appalled.

First of all, human-made vegetable oils are mainly made of seeds. Where they get their vegetable oil name from, I am unsure. These vegetable oils are processed over and over with hash and harmful human-made chemicals.

If there was a definitive human-made food, vegetable oils are the epitome.

As I continued to research fats, I discovered they were all processed to some degree, but the God-made fats were squeezed or churned. God-made fats were not made by chemical reactions but by natural methods. God-made is defined as fat that can be squeezed from a fruit or churned from a dairy product.

I discovered that God-made fats were pressed from olives, avocados, or coconuts and that no heat or chemicals were used to extract the fat. This makes these oils virgin oils. The oil from these fruits is pure and unrefined. The other God-made fats were produced by churning dairy. The dairy fats separated and were skimmed from the milk products be it from a cow, yak, sheep, or goat.


  • For high heat, cook your foods in organic extra virgin cold-pressed coconut and avocado oil.

  • For medium heat use, ghee and butter from grass-fed pasture-raised cows.

  • We have found that olive oil is fantastic raw.

The smoking point of avocado and coconut oils is much higher than the others. Grass-fed butter and ghee can handle some heat but not too much.

High-quality olive oil should always be used raw.

If you overheat any of the fats they will become an oxidant. Oxidants are what cause diseases. Olive oil oxidizes at a lower heat than the rest of the God-made fats.

We have all heard and read that The Mediterranean Diet is the best diet on the planet for health and longevity. The foundation of the Mediterranean Diet is olive oil. For years during the summer Vicky and I housed foreign exchange students from France and Spain. We discovered that The Mediterranean Diet was simple; food was just an excuse to pour olive oil all over it. The students would pour raw olive oil onto their steaks, dip their bread in it, and even slather it on their pizza.

Once we switched our patients to God-made fats and had them throw away their human-made fats, they climbed to a much higher level of health and well-being.

High-quality God-made fats will accelerate fat loss, improve clarity, and you will climb out of the abyss of menopause much more quickly.


Throw out all of your man-made vegetable oils: rapeseed (canola oil), soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, peanut, etc.

From this day on, use only God-made oils: Avocado, Coconut, Ghee, Grassfed Butter, and Olive oil.

When it comes to building a perfect meal, start with a palm-sized serving of animal protein. The next step is to landscape that protein with high-fiber vegetables. The more fiber within a vegetable, the less likely that vegetable is going to cause a blood sugar spike. And then place the cherry on top of the perfect meal, which is two thumbs of God-made fats.

We use two thumbs (two tablespoons) of coconut oil, avocado oil, grass-fed butter, or ghee to cook our proteins.

We place two thumbs (two tablespoons) of grass-fed butter, ghee, or olive oil directly on our cooked proteins.

In my experience, forty-two years worth of practicing health optimization, I have found that we become frustrated and depressed when we cannot achieve our "happy" weight. In addition, when we become overweight or over-waisted as we age, we lose our self-confidence and begin to isolate ourselves.

Here are my rules for a perfect meal:

  • Eat only if you are hungry

  • Eat one palm-sized serving of animal protein

  • Landscape the protein with high-fiber multi-colored vegetables

  • Add two thumb-sized servings of God-made fats either into the pan you cook the proteins or directly onto the cooked animal proteins.
